Having photographs that document important moments in one’s life are essential, typically during our childrens first years, we as parents take a ton of photos, documenting all the ‘firsts’ for posterity. Then it seems to slow down, gradually becoming longer and longer between photo sessions. Of course we always take photos on annual events such as birthdays and Christmas for example. Family photos are memories for our children and family to look back upon in time to come. When we become seniors, what happens when your children start asking questions about who you were, what you looked like during the earlier years of your life? We are all familiar with the family photos that become outdated as they hang on the living room wall, that outfit or hair style that never really suited us anyway, but hey, its a memory that perhaps you can look back at and laugh at; it was you at the time!! Professionally taken family portraits are an investment and will add to the sense of your familys togetherness.

Remember that a family portrait is not a once-in-a-lifetime event, either. Families change; they may expand, they may shrink, and they always age. Any addition to the family, whether it’s a baby or a new spouse, makes a good reason for a new family portrait. And even if there aren’t any new additions, it’s good to take a new family portrait every three or so years, to chronicle your family through the years. When children are younger, having a portrait of the family done each year is a great way to catalogue the progress each of them is making as they grow, and you never know when that last chance for a family photo will come. We may not want to admit it but the make-up of the family can change without warning and loved ones may pass on. There’s no reason to squander the opportunity to capture life together now.

As children grow up they find their own lives and move away. The days when family all stayed within a few miles of each other are long gone. Take advantage of the time you have together while you have it by getting portraits done. It is a sweet reminder of life together. Family portraits are also a great way to reminisce. Grandchildren may someday ask to see pictures of the family and wouldn’t it just be sad if there were few or none to share? Having the pictures brings the family together again as they look back on their lives before.
